David Horsey

David Horsey is the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist. Tribune Media Services syndicates his work to more than 200 newspapers.

Horsey's career has taken him to national political party conventions, presidential primaries, the Olympics, Europe and Japan. Horsey also spent a year working at the Hearst Newspapers Washington Bureau.

Horsey received a BA in Communications from the University of Washington where he was editor of the student newspaper, The Daily. As a Rotary Foundation Scholar, Horsey earned an MA in International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury (U.K.). In 2004, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Seattle University. Columns magazine has named him as one of the 100 most notable alumni of the University of Washington in the 20th Century. Horsey is a member of the advisory board for the U of W College of Arts and Sciences.

Horsey won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1999 and 2003 and was a finalist for the prize in 1987. In 1998, he received the National Press Foundation's Berryman Award for Cartoonist of the Year.

The Society of Professional Journalists has given Horsey a total of 14 first place regional awards for cartooning, governmental reporting and spot news reporting as well as the 1999 Susan Hutchison Bosch Award for outstanding achievement in journalism. Horsey took first place in the 1994 Best of the West journalism competition and, in 1995, was the first cartoonist to win the Environmental Media Award. In 1991, he received a Global Media Award from the Population Institute.

In 2000-2001, he served as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

Horsey has published five collections of his professional work, Horsey's Rude Awakenings (1981), Horsey's Greatest Hits of the '8Os (1989), The Fall of Man (1994), One Man Show (1999) and From Hanging Chad to Baghdad (2003). In 1992, he co-edited an anthology, Cartooning AIDS Around the World.

A fourth-generation Washingtonian, David Horsey resides in Seattle with his wife, Nole Ann, a continuing education specialist at the U of W School of Nursing. His daughter, Darielle is a student at the U of W and his son Daniel attends Seattle University.

Description of Presentation: David Horsey has given presentations to a wide range of groups on both the East and West coasts and in France and England. Using his own cartoons to punctuate his commentary, he speaks on the art of political cartooning, on current events, on presidential politics over the last 25 years, on social issues and on many other topics. Presentations can be tailored for specific groups.
Length of Presentation: 30 to 60 minutes
Availability: Horsey is available for appearances before any gathering, with some restrictions related to partisan events.
Terms: Fees are negotiable. All travel and hotel costs must be included.
Setup Needs: Presentations are made using PowerPoint. A big screen and portable microphone are preferred.
