ICYMI—A teacher in Texas used a @DWFitzsimmons cartoon about systemic racism during a class lesson, setting off a chain of events that lead to calls the teacher be fired by the GOP governor. The kneejerk firestorm started last week & has only grown since:
A few parents expressed concern over the cartoon and then the Fraternal Order of Police jumped in the fray, expressing their dismay at being drawn in the same way as the KKK.
After the police demanded the lesson plan be withdrawn, the Governor Texas inserted himself into the middle school fight and demanded the teacher be fired. Of course @FoxNews was all over the story:
Even after the school apologized and pulled the lesson from the online curriculum, republicans continued to be outraged that a history teacher was teaching American history.
Others rushed to defend the teacher. @dcagle wrote “It is the role of teachers to prepare students…to evaluate controversies in the news by exposing them to different points of view about the issues of the day. There’s no better way to do that than through editorial cartoons.
The cartoonist finally published a column defending the teacher, the cartoon and the First Amendment in no uncertain terms: “Persecuting, smearing and scapegoating public school teachers for teaching truth, civic dialogue, historical context and critical thought is beyond unacceptable. It’s un-American.
The Daily Cartoonist continues to cover this firestorm for as long as it burns.
