Darrin Bell wins Pulitzer Prize

A big congratulations to Darrin Bell on winning the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning! The Pulitzer committee cited Bell "For beautiful and daring editorial cartoons that took on issues affecting disenfranchised communities, calling out lies, hypocrisy and fraud in the political turmoil surrounding the Trump administration." Bell was the first African-American cartoonist to win the coveted journalism prize.

Also, congrats to finalists Ken Fisher, aka Ruben Bolling akak Tom the Dancing Bug — and Rob Rogers, who's unwillingness to back off on criticism of Trump cost him his job in 2018.

In an interview with The Washington Post's Michael Cavna, Bell discusses why he got back into editorial cartooning after doing two daily comic strips over the past 18 years. https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2019/04/15/how-trayvon-martin-tragedy-led-darrin-bells-historical-editorial-cartooning-pulitzer/

A few days later, NPR talk to Bell about the historic win, and his role models growing up: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/16/714073919/pulitzer-prize-winner-darrin-bell-on-how-trayvon-martins-death-inspired-his-work
