Back in the mid-’90s,
Steve Kelley — current president-elect
of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists — and Jack Lemmon were booked to go on The Late Late
Show with Tom Snyder. That hour generally featured “two segments with the
superstar and one with the also-ran,” Kelley said. When the veteran Hollywood
actor and the cartoonist met in the green room, there was little doubt as to
the pecking order, at least until Lemmon went to pour himself a cup of coffee.
Lemmon barely had pot in
hand when Kelley boomed out, “Put that coffee down!”
Just as he did in Glengarry
Glen Ross, Lemmon froze, then burst out laughing as Kelley delivered the
next line in Alec Baldwin’s famous boiler-room rant: “Coffee’s for closers!”
